On Friday, Ford Motor announced its intention to reopen an export-oriented manufacturing facility in Tamil Nadu, India. The company might reenter a market it exited three years ago.
Two days after Tamil Nadu’s chief minister revealed discussions to resume manufacturing in the state for exports, Ford sent a letter of intent to the state government. The announcement marks a step forward in the planned resumption of production.

Ford stopped manufacturing automobiles for local use in India in 2021 due to difficulties in increasing production levels. It terminated exports in 2022, leaving the world’s third-largest automobile market, which is mainly dominated by Asian competitors.
“The move will see the facility re-purposed to focus on manufacturing for export to global markets,” Ford said in a statement.
Ford stated that more information, including the vehicles it intends to produce at the site, will be released at a later time.
It produced engines and automobiles at its plant in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, before it closed.
