In an age where information is often described as the new currency, ensuring universal access to it becomes paramount. The International Day for Universal Access to Information, observed annually on September 28th, reminds us of the importance of information accessibility for a thriving, informed society. In this blog, we’ll delve into the history of this day and explore the theme for 2023, highlighting its significance in our interconnected world.

A Glimpse into History

The roots of the International Day for Universal Access to Information can be traced back to September 28, 2016, when the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) adopted a resolution recognizing the need for a dedicated day to celebrate and promote the universal right to access information. This resolution marked a significant step toward acknowledging that access to information is a fundamental human right.

The choice of September 28th for this observance is not coincidental. It pays homage to the date when the Windhoek Declaration was adopted in 1991. The Windhoek Declaration is a landmark document in the realm of press freedom, providing a framework for an independent and pluralistic media environment. This declaration was adopted during a UNESCO seminar on “Promoting an Independent and Pluralistic African Press,” held in Windhoek, Namibia. By celebrating the International Day for Universal Access to Information on September 28th, we not only honor this pivotal document but also reinforce its principles.

The 2023 Theme: “Access to Information for Sustainable Development”

Every year, the International Day for Universal Access to Information features a specific theme, and 2023 is no exception. The theme for this year is “Access to Information for Sustainable Development.” This theme resonates strongly with the global goals of sustainable development, as outlined in the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

But what does “Access to Information for Sustainable Development” really mean?

1. Empowering Communities: Access to information empowers individuals and communities with the knowledge needed to make informed decisions. In the context of sustainable development, informed choices can lead to the adoption of practices that are environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable.

2. Transparency and Accountability: Transparency is a cornerstone of sustainable development. Access to information promotes transparency in governance, business, and other sectors, helping to hold decision-makers accountable for their actions and fostering trust between citizens and institutions.

3. Innovation and Solutions: Information access stimulates innovation and problem-solving. By providing people with the tools to access information, we can unlock new ideas and solutions that can contribute to sustainable development, whether in healthcare, education, agriculture, or other critical areas.

4. Closing the Digital Divide: In today’s digital age, the digital divide is a significant barrier to information access. Bridging this gap and ensuring equitable access to digital resources is essential for achieving sustainable development goals.

5. Preserving Indigenous Knowledge: Access to information is not limited to modern technology. It also involves preserving and sharing indigenous knowledge, which can be invaluable for sustainable resource management and cultural preservation.

The International Day for Universal Access to Information reminds us that information is a powerful tool for positive change. It is a reminder that every individual, regardless of their background or circumstances, has the right to access information that can shape their lives and the world around them. The 2023 theme, “Access to Information for Sustainable Development,” underscores the crucial role that information plays in achieving a more sustainable, equitable, and just world. As we celebrate this day, let us commit to promoting information access and ensuring that it is used as a force for good in our ever-evolving global society.
