At least 30 people have died as a result of flooding brought on by heavy rains in Pakistan this week, according to authorities on Friday. Lahore, the country’s second-largest city, has seen its highest level of precipitation in over 40 years.

The start of the monsoon season has caused floods and landslides throughout South Asia over the past week. Consequently, at least 195 people have died and nearly 200 are missing in one incident in neighboring India.

Lahore, Pakistan

Rainstorms pounded Pakistan’s north, increasing the risk of electrocution and causing floods and building collapses.

Authorities in Punjab, a province in the northeastern region, reported six fatalities. Moreover, they issued a warning that flash floods are predicted in the south this week. “The 44-year-old rainfall record was broken in Lahore once again,” stated utility officials.

According to Anwar Shehzad, a spokesman for the province’s disaster management agency, twelve children perished in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa over the last three days. This tragic loss was due to rain and flooding in the northwest province, as reported to Reuters.

According to international organizations like the United Nations, Pakistan is among the nations most susceptible to catastrophic weather events and climate change. In 2022, floods caused havoc in Pakistan, killing over 1,700 people and uprooting millions of others.
