Instagram’s mobile app is no longer accessible in Turkey, as reported by the infotech authority on Friday. The ban does not specify the reason for it or how long it will last.
Fahrettin Altun, a Turkish communications official, criticized the platform on Wednesday for restricting condolence posts about the death of Ismail Haniyeh, a prominent figure in the Palestinian militant group Hamas. Consequently, this action followed his condemnation.
Altun, the Turkish presidency’s director of communications, stated on X, “This is censorship, pure and simple.” Moreover, he noted that Instagram had not mentioned any policy infractions as justification for its decision.
Parent company of Instagram, Meta Platforms Inc., remained silent at first regarding Altun’s remarks and the ban.
The ruling was posted on the website of Turkey’s Information Technologies and Communication Authority (BTK) on August 2.
