Toyota’s global output falls in June, hit by Japan and China

Toyota’s global production fell in June, marking the fifth consecutive month due to a home market scandal and China’s price war.

Japan’s top automaker’s global output fell 12.9% to 795,862 vehicles, marking the steepest drop since December 2022.

In its home market, output plunged 18.8% after transport ministry found irregularities in Toyota’s and others’ certification applications, widening an auto safety scandal.

In China, amid rapid market gains and price cuts by BYD, Toyota’s production fell 21.7%, the fifth consecutive 20%+ decline.

Production in North America dipped 6.2%, while in Europe it fell 6.6%, owing to fewer production days than last year.

Toyota’s global sales fell 5.1% this month, hampered by reductions in Japan and China.

The automaker will report first-quarter results Thursday, expecting a 21% profit rise to ¥1.35 trillion, driven by a weaker yen and strong U.S. hybrid demand.

During the first six months of the year, the automaker’s global production declined 5%, while global sales fell 0.9%.

Both sales and production numbers include the upscale Lexus brand.
