Netflix announced that the popular South Korean drama “Squid Game” will return for a third and final season on June 27. This announcement took place during the streaming platform’s “Next on Netflix” event on Thursday.
The event also showcased a short clip from the upcoming season, highlighting another tense scene from the games.
The survival thriller series became a global sensation in 2021. It significantly boosted Netflix’s subscription numbers and became the service’s most-watched original series within its first month.
Netflix reported that 142 million households watched the dark drama, which revolves around people competing in a deadly contest to erase financial debt.
The return of “Squid Game,” along with high-profile live events like the Jake Paul-Mike Tyson boxing match and two NFL games on Christmas Day, helped Netflix add a record 19 million subscribers in its fourth quarter. This growth brought the total global subscriber base to nearly 302 million.
The third season will be the series’ final installment. Korean writer and producer Hwang Dong-hyuk developed the show for television. The story will again follow Lee Jung-jae as the protagonist Seong Gi-hun, who is determined to put an end to the dystopian games.
“Squid Game” is one of three popular series returning to Netflix this year. The supernatural drama “Stranger Things” will return for its fifth and final season. Additionally, the Addams Family-inspired series “Wednesday” is back for its second season.
“Stranger Things” creators Matt and Ross Duffer mentioned that they filmed more than 650 hours of footage for the final season. They also told members of the press at Netflix’s annual showcase that there will be more stories to tell.
Netflix Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria stated, “With more than 700 million people watching, we can’t just be one thing. We need to be the best version of everything.”
Other highlights from the showcase included footage of Guillermo del Toro’s new film, “Frankenstein,” which reimagines Mary Shelley’s classic tale.
Guillermo shared in videotaped remarks, “This film has been on my mind since I was a child – for fifty years. And I’ve been trying to make it for 20 to 25 years.”
Ben Affleck promoted a drama titled “RIP,” where he collaborates once again with Matt Damon. This crime thriller is inspired by true events and is set in Florida.
Stand-up comedian John Mulaney will return to Netflix on March 12 with a weekly live late-night show called “Everybody’s Live with John Mulaney.” This show will run for 12 weeks.
Mulaney remarked, “We will be live globally with no delay. We will never be relevant. We will never be your source for news. We will always be reckless.”
Tina Fey, creator of “30 Rock,” will adapt Alan Alda’s 1981 romantic comedy “The Four Seasons” into an eight-episode comedy series. She will star alongside co-stars Steve Carell, Will Forte, Kerri Kinney-Silver, Colman Domingo, and Marco Calvani.
