Italy’s antitrust regulator AGCM announced on Wednesday that it has penalized Meta, the owner of Facebook and Instagram, for improper business practices. The watchdog highlighted these practices as unfair and in violation of regulations.
According to the regulator’s statement, AGCM discovered that Instagram users were not adequately notified about the use of their personal data for commercial purposes.
Additionally, it said that users of Facebook and Instagram were not provided with adequate information regarding how to challenge account suspensions.
The regulator stated that Meta has already resolved the issues.
A representative for Meta issued a statement saying, “We disagree with the Italian competition authority’s decision and are assessing our options.”
The representative went on to say that Meta has made a number of adjustments for Italian users since August 2023 in response to the authority’s concerns. Among these adjustments is greater transparency regarding the company’s usage of data to display advertisements on Instagram.
