General Motors will leverage Nvidia’s artificial intelligence chips and software. They plan to develop autonomous vehicle technology and improve factory workflow.

Traditional automakers are finding it difficult to commercialize autonomous technology. This technology has proven more challenging and expensive than anticipated. However, it represents a potential boost to sales and a source of subscription revenue from motorists.

GM and Nvidia will collaborate to build AI systems. They will use Nvidia’s platforms to train AI manufacturing models for factory planning. GM also intends to use Nvidia’s autonomous tech for future advanced driver-assistance systems.

When asked about financial terms, a GM spokesperson stated that the companies have a strategic collaboration on using AI in manufacturing. The spokesperson also added that GM will buy chips from Nvidia for driver-assistance technology.

Numerous automakers and suppliers, including Toyota and Hyundai, have partnered with Nvidia this year. They aim to develop autonomous driving capabilities. This is happening amidst competition from Tesla, which uses proprietary technology to run its Full Self-Driving system.

GM previously used Nvidia’s chips to power its self-driving Cruise robotaxis. However, GM began developing custom chips in-house to reduce cost and dependency. This was before GM shut down the robotaxi business last year to concentrate on AV technology for personal vehicles.

GM has forecast that its Super Cruise driver-assistance technology would earn about $2 billion in total annual revenue within five years. Super Cruise is free for three years. Following this period, customers can subscribe for $25 a month or $250 a year.

Other companies have also partnered with Nvidia for their advanced driver-assistance systems. These companies include Chinese EV maker BYD, German carmaker Mercedes-Benz, and U.S. EV startup Rivian.

GM had previously used Nvidia’s platforms. It used them for training AI models, including for simulation and validation.
