DeepSeek, a Chinese AI service, is back on South Korean app markets after roughly two months. Downloads had been halted due to data protection concerns.
South Korea’s Personal Information Protection Commission stated on Thursday that DeepSeek transferred user data and prompts without authorization when the service launched in South Korea in January.
App downloads were suspended in February due to these data protection questions. However, the service is now downloadable again via the Apple App Store and Google Play Store in South Korea.
DeepSeek states in its revised privacy policy: “We process your personal information in compliance with the Personal Information Protection Act of Korea.”
DeepSeek also said users can now refuse data transfer to several companies in China and the United States.
DeepSeek did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Monday.
South Korea’s data protection agency reported DeepSeek voluntarily chose to make the app downloadable again. They are free to do so “after at least partially reflecting its recommendations.”
