Rescuers in Nepal and neighboring Tibet navigated debris-choked valleys and mud-slicked hillsides following a catastrophic flash flood triggered by a high-altitude glacier collapse in Nepal. The massive wall of ice, mud, and rock surged down a mountain river channel at speeds reaching 50 meters per second for over 20 kilometers, obliterating entire villages, key infrastructure, and vital border facilities along the historic Kathmandu-Lhasa trek route. Authorities have confirmed hundreds of deaths in Nepal, with bodies recovered more than 100 kilometers downstream from the primary impact zone in Trishuli. Over 1,000 people remain unaccounted for across the region, including hundreds of foreign nationals and pilgrims traveling toward sacred sites at Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar.

Data confirmed that an initial seismic signal was generated by the physical force of the massive rock and ice collapse itself rather than a tectonic earthquake. Secondary landslide debris has since dammed the Bhotekoshi river, forming a volatile artificial lake containing millions of cubic meters of water. With heavy additional water inflow expected to create a severe outburst risk, disaster management agencies in both Nepal and China have issued urgent evacuation orders for communities along the lower riverbanks while emergency crews work to drop supplies and locate survivors cut off by destroyed roads and bridges.
