‘Supergirl’ delivers a refreshingly human, rebellious take on the DC icon

Australian actor Milly Alcock, who stars as Kara Zor-El/Supergirl in the upcoming DC Studios blockbuster, promises a more grounded, humanized take on the iconic character. Speaking at a London fan preview alongside co-stars Jason Momoa, Eve Ridley, and Matthias Schoenaerts, the 26-year-old House of the Dragon breakout described her version of the superhero as a relatable, humble rebel who may catch audiences off guard. Stepping into her first-ever feature film role, Alcock shared that the massive production was an empowering emotional roller coaster that mixed incredible highs with moments of deep self-doubt, ultimately leaving her feeling capable of tackling any future project.

The film is an adaptation of the comic series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, directed by Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya, Cruella) from a script by Ana Nogueira. The plot follows Superman’s cousin as she teams up with a young girl named Ruthye (Ridley) on a cosmic quest to hunt down a space pirate named Krem (Schoenaerts), seeking justice for Ruthye’s family while rescuing Supergirl’s dog, Krypto. Their journey crosses paths with the intergalactic bounty hunter Lobo, played by Momoa. Gillespie noted that he was drawn to the project by the raw, flawed nature of the protagonist in the source material, expressing excitement over bringing a superhero dealing with trauma and personal issues to the big screen in a way that feels authentic to audiences.

For Momoa, playing Lobo fulfills a lifelong ambition to portray a favorite childhood comic character. Describing the character as adding “spice” to the narrative, Momoa hinted that positive fan reception could lead to future standalone appearances, comparing the approach to how Aquaman was built up. Fans won’t have to wait long to see the final product, as Supergirl kicks off its international theatrical release tomorrow, June 24.
