Universal commits £5bn to first European theme park north of London

Comcast NBCUniversal has committed an investment exceeding £5 billion to construct its inaugural European theme park in Bedfordshire, situated north of London. The mega-project will be backed by £1.3 billion in British government funding dedicated to enhancing surrounding road, rail, and infrastructure networks. Officially named the “Universal United Kingdom Resort,” the development is projected to employ approximately 20,000 individuals during its construction phase and generate an additional 8,000 permanent positions upon its scheduled opening in 2031. This new site joins Universal’s existing global portfolio of five resorts across California, Florida, Singapore, Japan, and China, which feature major attractions centered around popular cinematic franchises like Harry Potter and Jurassic Park.

The media conglomerate revealed that the UK destination will feature multiple themed lands, with the goal of drawing 8.5 million visitors during its opening year. The resort’s official name and branding were unveiled at Downing Street by Comcast Chairman Brian Roberts alongside British Finance Minister Rachel Reeves and Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy, who hailed the massive capital injection as a major endorsement of the UK economy. Roberts highlighted Comcast’s deep-rooted commercial footprint in Britain through its ownership of Sky—which is currently in acquisition talks with ITV’s broadcasting division—and expressed optimism about delivering a premier global tourist destination. Comcast originally secured the 500-acre former industrial site in 2023 and successfully obtained zoning and planning approvals in December 2025.
