Typhoon Bebinca hits Shanghai, the strongest storm since 1949

Typhoon Bebinca made landfall in Shanghai on Monday morning as a Category 1 storm. It was the strongest tropical cyclone to hit the city directly in over 70 years.

Bebinca, the strongest storm to hit Shanghai since Typhoon Gloria in 1949, made landfall at 7:30 a.m. (2330 GMT). Official media reported that the storm packed peak wind gusts of 151 kph (94 mph) near its eye, hitting a city of almost 25 million people.

Shanghai, China

Strong typhoons that usually make landfall further south in China hardly ever directly reach Shanghai. Last week, the deadly Category 4 hurricane Yagi tore across the southern province of Hainan.

Since Sunday night, the city’s two airports have canceled hundreds of flights. Shanghai Railway Station has also suspended certain rail services. These disturbances coincide with China’s three-day public holiday commemorating the mid-Autumn Festival.

Numerous boats have stopped operating, and resorts in Shanghai, such as Shanghai Disney Resort, Jinjiang Amusement Park, and Shanghai Wild Animal Park, have been temporarily closed.
