On Thursday, Malaysia launched a national office focused on artificial intelligence. This initiative aims to shape policies and tackle regulatory issues as the country seeks to become a regional hub for AI development.

In the past year, Malaysia has attracted billions of dollars in investment from global tech firms. These companies aim to build critical infrastructure to meet the rising demand for their cloud and AI services.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim described the launch of the new office as “another historical moment in our digital transformation journey.”

The office aims to function as a centralized agency for artificial intelligence. It will focus on strategic planning, research, development, and regulatory oversight, as outlined on its website.

In its first year, the office plans to achieve seven key objectives. These objectives include creating a code of ethics, establishing an AI regulatory framework, and developing a five-year action plan for AI technology through to 2030.

On Thursday, the government announced strategic partnerships with six companies, including Amazon, Google, and Microsoft. Each of these companies has unveiled data center, cloud, and AI projects in Malaysia over the past year.

Digital ventures have significantly boosted Malaysia’s economy in 2024. The investment authority reported 71.1 billion ringgit ($16.06 billion) in approved investments within the information and communications sub-sector this week.
