Israeli Strikes Kill 44 in Gaza, Hit Police Station

On Thursday, an Israeli airstrike in Jabalia, northern Gaza Strip, struck a police station. Local health authorities reported at least 10 deaths. The Israeli military stated they targeted a command center of Hamas and Islamic Jihad groups.

Medics reported two Israeli missiles hit the police station. It was located near a market. In addition to the deaths, dozens were wounded. The identities of the deceased were not immediately clear.

The Israeli military, apparently referring to the same incident, issued a statement. They said they “attacked a command and control centre operated by Hamas and the allied Islamic Jihad groups in Jabalia, which militants used to plan and execute attacks against Israeli forces.”

They accused Palestinian militant groups of exploiting civilians and civil properties for military purposes. Hamas and other factions deny this allegation.

Local health authorities stated that Israeli strikes killed at least 34 other people in separate airstrikes across the enclave. This brought Thursday’s death toll to 44.

The Gaza Health Ministry reported the Durra Children’s Hospital in Gaza City had become non-operational. This occurred a day after an Israeli strike hit the upper part of the building. The strike damaged the intensive care unit and destroyed the facility’s solar power panel system.

No one was killed in that incident. There was no Israeli comment on the incident.

On Thursday, Israel’s military said one soldier was killed during combat in the northern Gaza Strip. They also stated an officer and a reservist were severely injured.

Israel’s 18-month-old military campaign, launched in response to the October 7 attack by Hamas in 2023, has devastated Gaza’s health system. It has put many of the territory’s hospitals out of action, killed medics, and reduced crucial supplies.

Since a January ceasefire collapsed on March 18, Israeli attacks have killed more than 1,900 Palestinians. According to the Gaza health authorities, many of them were civilians. Hundreds of thousands have been displaced as “Israel seized what it calls a buffer zone of Gaza’s land.”

Efforts by Arab mediators Qatar and Egypt, backed by the United States, have so far failed to reconcile disputes between Israel and Hamas.

The attack by Hamas on Israel in October 2023 killed 1,200 people. They also took 251 hostages to Gaza. Since then, more than 51,300 Palestinians have been killed in the Israeli offensive in Gaza, according to health officials.
