Indonesia has permitted Elon Musk’s Grok chatbot to restart operations after lifting a temporary ban linked to sexualised content, following X Corp’s pledge to strengthen compliance with local regulations, according to a government statement.
Authorities had suspended Grok’s services in the Southeast Asian country three weeks earlier due to concerns over AI-generated pornographic material, making Indonesia the first nation to block access to the chatbot. A statement from the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs said access is being restored on a conditional basis and will remain under strict monitoring.
X and its artificial intelligence unit, xAI, which manages Grok, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Regulators and governments across Europe and Asia have criticised sexualised material generated by Grok, with some launching formal investigations.
Senior ministry official Alexander Sabar said Grok’s reinstatement followed X Corp’s submission of a written commitment outlining concrete steps to enhance service safeguards and prevent misuse. He emphasised that the agreement serves as the foundation for ongoing evaluation rather than marking the end of regulatory oversight.
Sabar added that X has introduced several multi-layered safeguards to curb misuse of Grok’s services, and authorities will continue to review their effectiveness.
