IMF Strategy Chief Calls on Governments to Maintain Policy Credibility and Price Stability

The International Monetary Fund’s newly appointed strategy chief called on government officials on Wednesday to preserve the credibility of their fiscal and monetary policies to ensure price stability amid widespread global economic volatility. Christian Mumssen, the IMF’s director of strategy, pointed to a rapid series of major economic shocks in recent years, highlighting the coronavirus pandemic, cost-of-living pressures, international trade frictions, and conflicts in both Ukraine and the Middle East.

He noted during an Atlantic Council event that artificial intelligence and digital finance are advancing at an unexpected pace, while the post-war global order is shifting toward a fragmented, multipolar landscape. Mumssen observed that while the global economy has shown impressive resilience against these disruptions, the sheer magnitude of these changes generates immense uncertainty, meaning leaders should anticipate further unexpected challenges.

To counter these pressures, he emphasized that governments must focus closely on inflation, employment, economic growth, and maintaining sound public finances and debt management. He warned that frequent supply chain disruptions are likely to pose ongoing threats to price stability, making it essential for nations to strengthen their defenses against supply shocks and geopolitical friction.

Additionally, Mumssen stressed the importance of managing rapid technological innovations, specifically ensuring that the swift rise of AI drives inclusive economic growth. He pointed out that the primary challenge of the current global financial environment is that multiple major transformations are unfolding simultaneously. While these structural shifts and technological revolutions demand stronger international cooperation, Mumssen cautioned that the global governance system is instead becoming more fragmented, and he urged nations to collaborate with the IMF to find effective solutions.
