HSBC to Establish Technology Institute in Hong Kong to Address Agentic AI Fraud Risks

HSBC is setting up a global artificial intelligence (AI) and emerging technology institute in Hong Kong to develop advanced solutions that can be integrated into its business operations worldwide.

The institute is expected to commence operations in early 2027, with an initial research focus on AI skills development, technology safety, fraud prevention, post-quantum cryptography and blockchain. It will also examine emerging fraud risks associated with the growing use of agentic AI.

David Liao, HSBC’s Co-Chief Executive for Asia Pacific and the Middle East, said technological advancements are rapidly transforming the financial services industry, adding that the bank intends to explore emerging opportunities through a strategic and measured approach.

He highlighted Hong Kong’s financial sector expertise, research infrastructure and international connectivity as key factors supporting the city’s selection as the institute’s location.

HSBC has appointed the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) as its primary academic partner, with plans to collaborate with additional academic institutions and technology companies.

HKUST will contribute scientific expertise, specialised research capabilities, access to skilled talent and links with leading universities and research institutions worldwide. HSBC said further technology partnerships could be established as the initiative develops.

The institute will be located in Hong Kong’s Northern Metropolis.
