The Bimaristan al-Muayyad Sheikh, a hospital complex from 1420 A.D., was among the monuments in Historic Cairo that were renovated. Egyptian officials and the U.S. ambassador helped with this renovation.
The enormous crenulated facade and the inlaid Kufic Arabic inscriptions are what make this edifice remarkable.
“It is a new policy the government is following, which is to merge civil society to help preserve the antiquities,” Mohamed Ismael, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, said.
He said that the neighborhood’s residents will be involved in cultural events held in the facility.
Two more monuments, the 14th-century Gate of Manjak al-Silahdar and the 18th-century Sabil Kuttab of Ruqayya Dudu, were repaired with assistance from the US Agency for International Development and reopened on Sunday.
