COP28 president urges countries to develop plans for the transition from fossil fuels

The United Arab Emirates, the host of last year’s COP28 climate summit, issued a call to governments on Tuesday. They urged them to actively take steps in the transition away from fossil fuels.

In December, intense negotiations led to countries agreeing on the transition away from fossil fuels as outlined in COP28’s UAE Consensus document. This agreement aims to limit the worst effects of climate change. Nations must now devise strategies for achieving their objectives.

“We must now turn an unprecedented agreement into unprecedented action and results,” COP28 President Sultan Al Jaber stated on Tuesday.

Al Jaber, who leads the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, emphasized the need for countries to update their plans to combat climate change. These plans, known as nationally determined contributions or NDCs, play a crucial role in addressing environmental challenges. He conveyed this message while speaking at the International Energy Agency’s Paris headquarters.

The landmark 2015 Paris Agreement, in which countries committed to limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) above pre-industrial levels, mandates that countries update their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) every five years. This ensures ongoing efforts to address climate change and adapt to its impacts.
