Canada’s Trudeau under further pressure following special election ‘disaster’

On Tuesday, Canadian PM Trudeau’s political future questioned as Liberal Party loses seat, highlighting his waning popularity.

At approximately 5 am (1000 GMT), final results revealed Conservatives’ victory in Toronto-St Paul’s after the previous legislator resigned.

For the first time since 2015, the Conservatives won key seats in Toronto, crucial to Trudeau’s power.

Philippe Fournier, editor of 338Canada, lamented the Liberals’ situation, highlighting its significance.

Meanwhile, impending federal election by October 2025 indicates potential Liberal defeat to Conservatives, as per various polls.

Trudeau faces a challenge as losses suggest vulnerability for Liberals in Toronto, particularly in less secure areas.

Nonetheless, Some analysts suggest Liberals could improve by replacing Trudeau, despite his commitment to contesting the next election.

“Canadians are not in a decision mode right now,” he told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp last week.

Potential leadership contenders include Mark Carney and Trudeau ally Dominic LeBlanc.

Unlike Britain and Australia, Canada’s party leaders are chosen through fixed-date conventions, making removal difficult.

Long-standing governments often perform poorly in special elections, often blaming low turnout and voter protest.

However, Ipsos Public Affairs CEO Darrell Bricker highlighted that 44% of voters participated, a relatively high turnout.

“This was a workday Monday in a riding that is a Toronto traffic nightmare. This shows a strong desire among voters to send a signal for change,” he said in a social media post.

Conservatives prioritize axing carbon tax, reducing deficit, addressing housing crisis, and cracking down on crime.

Additionally, Leslie Church, once Finance Minister Freeland’s chief of staff, served as the Liberal candidate, linked to Trudeau’s inner circle.

Despite a prominent campaign and minister visits, she garnered 40.5%, while Conservatives obtained 42.1%. In 2021, Liberals won 49% to 22%.

Trudeau’s office didn’t respond; Tuesday’s schedule lacked media interactions.
