Generative AI has emerged as the most critical future technical capability for Southeast Asian finance professionals, far outstripping traditional technical skills like database management and coding, according to a joint report by ACCA and CA ANZ.
The survey of 1,600 global industry professionals reveals that 39% of Southeast Asian respondents view GenAI tools as a top-three essential skill over the next five years. In contrast, database management and programming lagged behind, chosen by just 16% and 11% of regional participants, respectively. Other high-demand capabilities include data visualization (34%), process automation (29%), data storytelling (27%), real-time dashboard creation (25%), and predictive analytics (24%).
Despite high enthusiasm for AI, a significant skill gap remains. Nearly three-quarters (72%) of surveyed professionals report having minimal or no GenAI expertise. Furthermore, 41% are pursuing independent upskilling, highlighting a shortfall in formal, employer-provided training programs.
Trust in AI outputs remains another major hurdle. An overwhelming 93% of finance professionals voiced concerns regarding the accuracy and verifiability of AI-generated insights, pointing to risks such as hallucinations, algorithmic bias, unverified data, and opaque decision-making processes.
To bridge these gaps, finance functions are increasingly integrating with IT departments, with nearly 60% of respondents reporting close cross-functional collaboration. The report concludes that organizations must move beyond informal self-learning by establishing structured training programs focused on AI literacy, predictive tools, data governance, and risk mitigation.
