New Oscar Eligibility Guidelines Ban Synthetic Actors and AI-Generated Scripts

Organizers of the Academy Awards introduced updated regulations on Friday, explicitly stating that only human performances and writing are eligible for the industry’s most prestigious accolades. These new guidelines from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will take effect for the upcoming Oscars ceremony in March 2027.

The move comes in response to growing anxiety within the film and television sectors regarding generative AI. Many industry professionals fear that studios might prioritize technology over human labor to reduce production expenses. These concerns reached a fever pitch following the debut of “Tilly Norwood,” an AI-generated actress, and subsequent claims from producers regarding studio interest—a development that triggered significant pushback from the SAG-AFTRA union.

While the Academy clarified that filmmakers may still utilize AI as a supplementary tool, “synthetic” performers like Norwood are strictly disqualified from Oscar contention. Furthermore, the organization specified that all scripts must be authored by humans to be considered for an award. To ensure compliance, the Academy reserved the right to demand additional documentation to verify the human origins of any submission.
