Netflix said on Thursday that a sequel to “KPop Demon Hunters,” the streaming platform’s most-watched film ever, is now in development.
The upcoming film will continue Netflix’s creative partnership with co-directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans and will be the first project under their new multi-year exclusive agreement to write and direct animated content.
Kang said she feels proud as a Korean filmmaker that audiences want more stories from the world and characters created in the original film, adding that there is still much more to explore and that the sequel marks just the beginning.
Produced by Sony Pictures Animation, the original musical follows the K-pop girl group Huntrix—Rumi, Mira and Zoey—who juggle their fame with secret identities as demon hunters. Lead singers EJAE, Audrey Nuna and Rei Ami helped propel the film’s hit song “Golden” to the top of the Billboard Hot 100.
The movie became a major success with critics and during awards season, winning best animated feature and best song at the 31st Critics Choice Awards, as well as best animated motion picture and best original song at the 83rd Golden Globes. It also earned two Academy Award nominations for best animated feature and best original song. “Golden” later won a Grammy for best song written for visual media, becoming the first K-pop track to receive the award.
In January 2026, Netflix revealed that the film had broken records on the platform, attracting 482 million views within six months, along with another 32 million views for its lyric videos. Its soundtrack has also continued to trend globally.
Speaking earlier this year, Appelhans said any sequel would require a strong creative vision from the start, noting that having a clear direction is essential to avoid losing focus. He added that the team aims to create something meaningful to them, believing that audiences will connect with the story if it is done well.
