Amazon in Talks to Invest Up to 50 Billion Dollars in OpenAI as AI Funding Race Heats Up

Amazon is in discussions to invest up to 50 billion dollars in OpenAI, the Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday, highlighting the intensifying competition among leading technology companies to secure strategic positions in the artificial intelligence sector.

According to people familiar with the matter, Amazon Chief Executive Officer Andy Jassy is leading negotiations with OpenAI Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman, as part of a fundraising effort that could raise as much as 100 billion dollars and value OpenAI at around 830 billion dollars.

If the deal is finalized, Amazon would likely become the largest single investor in the funding round, reflecting the company’s growing focus on artificial intelligence technologies and infrastructure.

OpenAI’s funding drive comes amid rising costs of developing and deploying advanced AI systems and growing demand for computing resources. The company is also preparing groundwork for a potential initial public offering that could value it at up to 1 trillion dollars, according to market sources.

Other major investors are also weighing significant commitments in the funding round. SoftBank Group is reportedly in talks to contribute as much as 30 billion dollars, while Nvidia and Microsoft are exploring investments that could collectively exceed 60 billion dollars.

The talks between Amazon and OpenAI further highlight the strategic importance of AI partnerships for major technology companies. Amazon already has a substantial presence in the artificial intelligence and cloud computing markets through its Amazon Web Services division and its existing investments in AI startups.

Amazon has previously invested in Anthropic, a leading competitor in generative AI, underscoring its multi pronged approach to AI development. Market analysts say the potential investment in OpenAI could deepen ties between the two companies and expand Amazon’s role in the evolving AI ecosystem.

Both Amazon and OpenAI declined to comment when approached for further details, and the discussions are understood to be in the early stages with final terms yet to be agreed.
