Amazon shelves drone delivery plans in Italy

ROME – Amazon said on Sunday it will no longer move ahead with plans to roll out drone deliveries in Italy, citing broader business regulatory constraints despite progress with aviation authorities.

Italy’s civil aviation regulator ENAC described the decision as unexpected, saying on Saturday that it stemmed from company policy and was linked to “recent financial events involving the Group.” Amazon had announced in December 2024 that it had successfully completed initial drone delivery tests in San Salvo, a town in the central Abruzzo region.

In a statement to Reuters, Amazon said: “After a strategic review, we have decided to discontinue our commercial drone delivery plans in Italy.”

The company added that while discussions with Italian aerospace regulators had been constructive and encouraging, the wider business regulatory environment in Italy currently does not align with its long-term goals for the drone delivery programme.
