“Zootopia 2” sets new record as Disney’s highest-grossing animated film

Walt Disney Animation Studios said on Wednesday that “Zootopia 2” has overtaken 2019’s “Frozen 2” to become its highest-grossing film to date, offering a rare bright spot as global box office revenues remain below pre-pandemic levels.

The animated sequel is the studio’s fifth film to surpass $1 billion worldwide, earning about $1.46 billion in total box office takings following a strong opening over the U.S. Thanksgiving weekend. Much of the momentum came from China, where the film has generated more than $560 million and dominated its opening weekend, accounting for roughly 95% of all ticket sales.

“Zootopia 2” kicked off Hollywood’s key holiday season with an estimated $556 million in global box office revenue in its debut weekend. The sequel brings back rabbit police officer Judy Hopps and her fox partner Nick Wilde for a new adventure in the vibrant animal city.

As the global box office continues to lag behind 2019 levels, the film’s standout performance has provided a boost for Disney and cinema operators counting on strong holiday attendance during the year’s second-busiest moviegoing period.
