Westpac deploys Copilot to 35,000 employees worldwide

Westpac has introduced Microsoft 365 Copilot across its global workforce, covering 35,000 employees as well as contractors and service partners.

According to a statement released on 5 February 2026, the Australian lender has become the largest financial services institution in the Asia-Pacific region to deploy Copilot at this scale.

The rollout follows a 2025 pilot programme in which 15,000 Westpac employees in Australia used the AI tool.

Alongside the deployment, the bank is providing AI training initiatives, including masterclasses, support materials, and prompt-based workshops to help staff maximise the technology.

Westpac said the adoption is aimed at enhancing operational performance and allowing employees to focus more on strategic and value-added tasks.

Chief data, digital, and AI officer Andrew McMullan said AI is helping teams work more productively and retrieve information more quickly, reducing operational friction, although he noted that technology alone cannot drive transformation.

The bank’s teams have already developed AI-powered agents to assist functions such as human resources and IT by responding to routine employee queries and completing basic administrative tasks.

Westpac has also established an innovation sandbox on Microsoft Azure to test and develop new AI-driven applications.
