During a meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart at the Pentagon on Tuesday, U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin stated that the United States will shortly announce more than $2.3 billion in new security assistance for Ukraine.

Austin also acknowledged Ukraine’s goal of joining NATO in the future. At the NATO meeting in Washington, D.C., next week, Austin declared: “We will take steps to build a bridge to NATO membership for Ukraine.”

Austin didn’t go into detail.

Since Moscow’s incursion in 2022, Ukrainian officials have been pleading with their partners for months. They seek stronger air defense systems to fend off frequent missile and drone attacks from Russian soldiers.

Austin stated that the most recent weapons package for Ukraine will enable the rapid purchase of NASAMS and Patriot air defense interceptors. Additionally, it includes anti-tank and air defense interceptors.

“I am proud that the United States will soon announce more than $2.3 billion in new security assistance for Ukraine,” Austin said, speaking at the top of a meeting with Ukraine’s Defence Minister Rustem Umerov.

“This package, under presidential drawdown authority, will provide more air defense interceptors, anti-tank weapons and other critical munitions from the U.S. inventories.”
