ByteDance has secured a $29.6 billion unsecured credit facility from nearly 30 international banks, driven largely by intense lender enthusiasm for its artificial intelligence expansion. Coordinated by Citigroup and JPMorgan, the three-year loan—which includes options to extend for two additional years—represents Asia’s second-largest financing deal of the year, behind only SoftBank’s $40 billion raise in March. Strong demand from Chinese, U.S., European, and Singaporean institutions prompted the TikTok parent company to upsize the facility from its original $20 billion target, with Chinese banks subscribing to over 60% of the final allocation.
While officially designated for general corporate purposes, sources indicate the capital will primarily finance ByteDance’s offshore AI infrastructure and expansion beyond China. The tech giant is actively competing with global hyperscalers on multimodal AI models and securing data center capacity across Southeast Asia. Notably, the debt is completely unsecured—meaning no assets or shares were pledged as collateral—reflecting exceptional confidence among lenders in ByteDance’s underlying balance sheet and creditworthiness. This transaction marks the company’s return to the global loan market following an $10.8 billion credit facility raised in late 2024.
