TikTok Commits €1 Billion to Launch Second Data Center in Finland

TikTok has announced plans to invest 1 billion euros to establish a second data center in Lahti, Finland, as part of a broader effort to store European user data locally. This move follows a similar investment in the country less than a year ago and is a key component of the company’s 12-billion-euro “European data sovereignty initiative,” which aims to secure the information of over 200 million users. The new facility is expected to have an initial capacity of 50 megawatts and is scheduled to be operational by 2027.

The decision comes at a time of increased regulatory scrutiny for TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance. While the company recently avoided a ban in the United States, it continues to face pressure from European authorities regarding data protection and the impact of its algorithms on younger users. By expanding its infrastructure in Finland, TikTok joins tech giants like Google and Microsoft, who are drawn to the region for its cold climate, stable regulatory environment, and access to affordable, low-carbon energy.

Despite the economic benefits, TikTok’s expansion has met with some political resistance in Finland. Last year, several officials expressed concern over national security and a perceived lack of transparency regarding the company’s operations. While the Finnish Ministry of Defense approved previous investments, some politicians urged local partners to reconsider their involvement with the social media platform.

Currently, TikTok distributes European user data across facilities in Ireland, Norway, and the United States. The company’s first Finnish data center, located in Kouvola, is expected to begin operations by the end of this year. While national political debate continues, local leaders in Lahti have welcomed the investment, citing its substantial economic impact on the city and the progress of its development plans.
