The Louvre art museum in Paris will raise its basic admission fee by 29% next year, fueling fears that visitors to the Olympic Games in Paris will face skyrocketing costs.

The Louvre, which houses the Mona Lisa and is the world’s most visited museum, announced on Friday that its entrance fee would increase to 22 euros ($23.70) in January from 17 euros. This is the first price increase since 2017.

The Louvre stated that the higher tariff would help it deal with rising energy costs and fund free admission for certain people such as children under the age of 18, teachers, and journalists.

The Olympics were not mentioned. However, the price increase at the Louvre is expected to coincide with other rising costs in Paris as the city prepares to host the Olympics.

During the Olympic Games, which begin on July 26 of next year, Paris metro ticket prices will nearly double.

Visitors to Paris next summer will also face major accommodation issues due to rising hotel prices and a crackdown on tourist apartment rentals. According to a Paris tourism office report, hotel prices will rise by more than 300% between the summer seasons of 2023 and 2024.
