Spotify submits app update to Apple with external purchase link for US users

Spotify has submitted an app update to Apple. This update includes an external link for users to purchase subscriptions. The move comes after a U.S. judge ruled that Apple violated an order requiring them to allow greater app download competition.

Spotify informed Apple in a letter that they plan to change their U.S. app to comply with Wednesday’s court ruling. The ruling stated that Apple cannot impose its new commission on purchases made outside of the app.

Spotify stated in a blog post, “The fact that we haven’t been able to deliver these basic services, which were permitted by the judge’s order four years ago, is absurd.”

Apple did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment.

U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers of Oakland issued an 80-page ruling. She stated that Apple failed to comply with her prior injunction order, imposed in an antitrust lawsuit filed by “Fortnite” maker Epic Games.

Apple stated it “strongly disagrees” with the decision but will comply with the court’s order. They also plan to appeal.

Spotify and Apple have a long-standing rivalry. The dispute centers on Apple’s App Store policies and their impact on Spotify’s business.

In August 2024, Spotify updated its app on Apple devices in the European Union to display pricing information for its plans and services. This occurred several months after Apple had rejected a similar move.

Separately, Apple reduced its share buyback program by $10 billion on Thursday. CEO Tim Cook told analysts that tariffs could add about $900 million in costs this quarter.
