Selena Gomez told Reuters on Sunday that she was happy that attention was now on her part in the new Mexican cartel musical “Emilia Perez” rather than her personal life.
“It’s a relief. I’d rather somebody say I did a terrible job than talk about my personal life. So, I feel very proud,” Gomez remarked at the Cannes Film Festival one day following the film’s world debut, which was greeted with a nine-minute standing ovation.
The former Disney star continued, saying that she was only a little portion of “Emilia Perez,” a “incredible masterpiece” that also starred Karla Sofia Gascon and Zoe Saldana.
The competition for the festival’s top prize, the Palme d’Or, features a film directed by Jacques Audiard. This film follows a Mexican drug lord who changes his gender and forms a nonprofit organization devoted to locating the bodies of missing persons.
Gomez, who also co-stars with Steve Martin and Martin Short in the Hulu streaming series “Only Murders in the Building,” is the most-followed woman on Instagram with 428 million followers.
Her life is scrutinized by the public due to her huge following, and headlines regarding her personal relationships, mental and physical health, and other matters are conjectured.
This month, the singer—who has been open about her lupus and bipolar disorder on social media—told NBC’s “Today” show that she has chosen to restrict comments on her account to friends exclusively in order to establish boundaries.
