Pope Francis, who is 88 years old, is in critical condition in a hospital where he is battling double pneumonia. The Vatican reported on Tuesday that the pope rested well throughout the night.
He was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli hospital on February 14 due to a serious respiratory illness that has since triggered other health issues.
The Vatican issued a brief statement saying, “The Pope rested well all night.”
On Monday, the Vatican noted that the pontiff’s condition remained critical but showed a “slight improvement.” They added that the “mild kidney insufficiency,” first reported over the weekend, was not a cause for concern.
Double pneumonia is a serious infection that inflames and scars both lungs, making breathing difficult. The Vatican described the pope’s infection as “complex,” indicating it was caused by two or more microorganisms.
Francis has been pope since 2013 and has experienced health issues over the past two years. He is especially vulnerable to lung infections because he developed pleurisy as a young adult and had part of one lung removed.
