Louvre Heist and Damages
Thieves successfully carried out a bold daylight robbery at the Louvre museum in Paris, stealing jewels valued at approximately €88 million ($102.63 million), Paris public prosecutor Laure Beccuau confirmed on Tuesday. The prosecutor emphasized that the financial loss pales in comparison to the historical damage caused by the theft.
The Crime and Stolen Items
The robbery, which some politicians have labeled a “national humiliation,” occurred on Sunday when four individuals used a crane to smash an upstairs window to gain entry. The thieves quickly grabbed items from a gallery dedicated to royal jewelry before fleeing the scene on motorbikes. The eight stolen items include a tiara and a set of earrings that belonged to Queen Marie-Amélie and Queen Hortense from the early 19th century. Authorities later recovered the Crown of Empress Eugenie outside the museum, suggesting it was dropped during the escape.
