Amazon.com has signed a multi-year agreement worth $38 billion to provide OpenAI with cloud computing infrastructure, granting the ChatGPT developer access to hundreds of thousands of Nvidia graphics processing units (GPUs) to train and operate its advanced artificial intelligence models.
Announced on Monday, the partnership highlights the AI industry’s rapidly growing demand for computing power, as companies race to develop technologies that could rival or exceed human-level intelligence. The news boosted Amazon’s shares by about 5% in premarket trading, reflecting investor optimism over its expanding role in the AI ecosystem.
Under the deal, OpenAI will immediately begin using Amazon Web Services (AWS) to support its model training and deployment needs. All the planned capacity is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2026, with provisions to scale further in 2027 and beyond as OpenAI’s computational requirements continue to grow.
The collaboration marks one of OpenAI’s first major strategic steps following a recent corporate restructuring that allows the company greater flexibility to operate commercially, moving further from its original nonprofit framework. Reports from Reuters indicate that OpenAI is preparing for a potential initial public offering that could value the company at up to $1 trillion, positioning it among the most valuable tech firms globally.
However, the surge in AI valuations and the enormous capital commitments—estimated to exceed $1 trillion for OpenAI alone—have sparked concerns among analysts and investors that the sector’s rapid expansion could be heading toward an investment bubble. Still, the partnership between Amazon and OpenAI underscores the central role of large-scale cloud and chip infrastructure in shaping the future of artificial intelligence innovation.
