OpenAI is in discussions with Amazon about raising at least ten billion dollars in new funding and potentially using Amazon’s artificial intelligence chips as part of a broader strategic relationship, according to people familiar with the matter.
The talks reflect OpenAI’s growing need for large scale computing power and capital as demand for advanced artificial intelligence models continues to surge. A deal of this size could place OpenAI’s valuation at several hundred billion dollars, underscoring strong investor interest in companies developing cutting edge AI technologies despite rising infrastructure costs.
As part of the discussions, Amazon may supply its Trainium chips, which are designed to support complex AI training and inference workloads. The chips are intended to provide an alternative to processors produced by other major semiconductor companies and would deepen OpenAI’s reliance on Amazon’s cloud computing ecosystem.
The potential investment would represent a significant expansion of the relationship between the two companies. OpenAI already purchases substantial cloud capacity and computing services, and the talks suggest Amazon is considering a deeper financial and technological commitment.
The discussions come as OpenAI continues to explore long term funding options to support its research and product development ambitions. The company has faced mounting costs tied to computing resources as it scales its models and services for a growing user base.
Neither OpenAI nor Amazon has publicly commented on the negotiations. Sources cautioned that the talks remain at an early stage and that the size, structure and final terms of any agreement could still change.
Industry analysts say a partnership of this scale could strengthen Amazon’s position in the competitive artificial intelligence market while giving OpenAI greater flexibility and diversity in its computing infrastructure as competition among major technology firms intensifies.
