OpenAI building rival to Microsoft’s GitHub, report says

OpenAI is reportedly building a new code-hosting platform aimed at competing with GitHub, which is owned by Microsoft.

According to a media report citing a source familiar with the matter, recurring service disruptions that left GitHub temporarily inaccessible in recent months prompted OpenAI engineers to explore developing their own alternative. The project is still in its early phases and may take several months before completion. Staff involved have also discussed the possibility of offering the code repository product to OpenAI’s existing customers.

If commercialised, the move would put the maker of ChatGPT in direct competition with Microsoft, one of its largest investors.

OpenAI was recently valued at $840 billion following a major $110 billion funding round backed by leading technology firms and Japan’s SoftBank, underscoring continued strong investor appetite for artificial intelligence despite concerns about stretched valuations.
