Major AI Firms Fall Short on Safety, New Report Warns

A new study by the Future of Life Institute has found that several major artificial intelligence developers, including Anthropic, OpenAI, xAI and Meta Platforms, are not meeting emerging global benchmarks for responsible and safe development of advanced systems.

The assessment, conducted by an independent panel of experts, concluded that none of the evaluated companies have established credible safeguards to manage the risks associated with highly capable or potentially superintelligent artificial intelligence. The panel noted that while technological progress is accelerating, the corresponding safety frameworks are advancing at a much slower pace.

The report also highlights growing public concern over the impact of advanced artificial intelligence tools, pointing to reported cases where interactions with artificial intelligence chatbots have been associated with self harm or mental health crises. Researchers argue that such incidents underline the urgency of implementing more robust oversight and protection measures.

According to the findings, regulation of artificial intelligence in the United States remains limited when compared with sectors such as aviation or pharmaceuticals. The study suggests that hesitance among some companies to support binding safety requirements continues to weaken broader efforts aimed at establishing consistent global standards.

In response to the report, several experts have renewed calls for a temporary pause on the development of highly advanced artificial intelligence systems until stronger governance models, risk controls and accountability mechanisms are formally in place.

Overall, the study warns that current industry practices are lagging behind the pace of innovation, raising concerns that powerful artificial intelligence systems may be deployed before adequate safety structures are established.
