Macron Meets Xi in Beijing as France Seeks Stronger Trade, Peace and Strategic Ties with China

French President Emmanuel Macron met Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on Thursday during a state visit aimed at strengthening economic ties, expanding diplomatic cooperation and addressing major global challenges.

Macron used the meeting to urge deeper collaboration on issues including geopolitics, trade, climate action and global security. He also called on China to play a more active role in helping bring about a resolution to the conflict in Ukraine.

The talks resulted in the signing of twelve agreements in areas such as investment, nuclear energy, green technology, culture and environmental cooperation. The broad scope of the agreements highlights the intention of both countries to boost bilateral trade and promote long term industrial partnerships.

President Xi emphasized China’s readiness to work closely with France in support of international stability and multilateral cooperation. He underscored the need for constructive dialogue in addressing shared global challenges, particularly security tensions and climate change.

Although the meeting reflected strong diplomatic goodwill, observers note that political and trade tensions between China and the European Union continue to pose obstacles. Analysts say it is unlikely that China will commit to resolving certain trade disputes immediately, given the complexity of the issues.

Macron, accompanied by a substantial business delegation, used the visit to advance France’s commercial interests and reinforce its strategic position within Europe as it prepares for upcoming international negotiations.
