Russia attacked numerous Ukrainian districts with missiles and drones, killing at least four people, the Ukrainian military reported early on Tuesday. The attack came a day after Moscow unleashed its largest air strike of the conflict against its neighbor.
In the Ukrainian city of Kryvyi Rih in the center, a hotel was “wiped out,” killing two people, according to local officials. Drone assaults on Zaporizhzhia, a city east of Kryvyi Rih, claimed the lives of two people.
The military administration of the Kyiv area stated on Telegram that the region’s air defense systems were deployed multiple times during the night. Additionally, these defenses were activated to fend off missiles and drones targeting the Ukrainian capital.
Witnesses for Reuters said that there were at least three rounds of explosions in Kiev overnight.
Russia launched more than 200 missiles and drones on Monday, destroying energy infrastructure and killing at least seven people. US President Joe Biden called the strike “outrageous.”
In their report published late on Monday, analysts at the Institute for the Study of War, a think tank with headquarters in Washington, stated that Moscow “likely lacks the defense-industrial capacity to sustain such massive strikes at a similar scale with regularity.”
The pro-war collective Rybar, along with other Russian military bloggers, described the Moscow attacks as an “act of retaliation.” They claimed this was in response to Ukraine’s unexpected invasion of Russian territory, the first of its kind since World War Two.
Three weeks after the incursion, Kyiv claims more progress, but the Kremlin stated on Monday that there will be a reaction to Ukraine’s activity in Kursk. Moscow claims that after repeatedly battering Ukrainian forces there, it is unable to drive them out.
The full impact of Tuesday’s attacks was not immediately clear. However, the Ukrainian air force claimed to have footage of several drone launches and the departure of Tu-85 strategic bombers and MiG-31 supersonic interceptor aircraft from Russian airfields.
The reports could not be independently confirmed by Reuters. Russia did not immediately respond.
In February 2022, President Vladimir Putin ordered a full-scale invasion of Russia’s smaller neighbor. However, the Kremlin claims the invasion was not directed at civilians.
According to the Russian ministry of defense, the strikes on Monday destroyed “all designated targets” in the vital energy infrastructure of Ukraine.
Beginning at about 2000 GMT on Monday, Kryvyi Rih, Kyiv, and the central and eastern areas of Ukraine were under alert for air raids for the most of the night.
Serhiy Lisak, the governor of the Dnipropetrovsk region where Kryvyi Rih is located, stated on Telegram that five people were hurt in the attack. Additionally, he mentioned that two citizens might still be under the debris of the hotel.
He said that there were also eight cars, six stores, and four tall buildings that sustained damage.
Ivan Fedorov, the region’s governor, posted on Telegram that two people had died and four had been injured in Zaporizhzhia over the course of the previous night.
Fedorov remarked, “Such are the consequences of the overnight attack by Shaheds on Zaporizhzhia,” alluding to the kamikaze drones manufactured in Iran that Russia is allegedly using in its operations, according to Kyiv.
