King Charles, diagnosed with cancer, will pause duties for treatment

On Monday, Buckingham Palace announced that King Charles, 75, diagnosed with cancer, will postpone public appearances to undergo treatment. Despite being less than 18 months into his reign, he remains “wholly positive.”

King Charles III

The palace stated that he has already started treatments and aims to resume full-time duties soon.

After spending three nights in the hospital last month for a corrective procedure on a benignly enlarged prostate, Charles faced a new challenge. Subsequently, he received a cancer diagnosis.

The diagnosis came after his hospital stay.

The palace revealed that a separate concern emerged during the king’s hospital stay.

“No further details are being shared at this stage, except to confirm that his majesty does not have prostate cancer,” the palace said in a statement.

“Throughout this period, his majesty will continue to undertake State business and official paperwork as usual.”

As a result, Charles will continue to meet with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. Meanwhile, his wife, Queen Camilla, will continue her engagements.

SMILING

On Sunday, the king attended a church service with Camilla, smiling and waving to onlookers. He gave no indication of his diagnosis during the event.

Charles made his first public appearance since leaving the London hospital. He was accompanied by his daughter-in-law Kate, who underwent scheduled treatments.

Kate, the Princess of Wales, had abdominal surgery for a non-cancerous condition. She will resume royal duties after Easter.

Prince William, caring for their children during her recovery, will make his first public appearance post-operation on Wednesday. Despite the royal tradition of keeping health matters private, Charles openly discussed his recent treatment.

“His Majesty has chosen to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer,” Buckingham Palace said.

Sunak expressed his best wishes to the King on X. “I have no doubt he’ll be back to full strength in no time and I know the whole country will be wishing him well,” he told reporters.

BIDEN CONCERN

Australia and Canada’s leaders, including Charles, the head of state in Canada, wished the king a swift recovery. US President Joe Biden expressed concern and announced plans to call Charles later.

“Navigating a cancer diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship takes hope and absolute courage,” said Vice President Joe Biden. “Jill and I join the people of the United Kingdom in praying that His Majesty experiences a swift and full recovery.”

The monarch personally informed his immediate family about his cancer diagnosis. According to a source close to the Duke of Sussex, Prince Harry, his younger son, will travel to the UK to see him in the coming days.

After stepping down from royal duties in 2020, Harry now lives in California with his American wife Meghan and their two children.

After waiting longer than any heir in British history to become king, Charles experienced a first year on the throne dominated by his coronation. It was Britain’s most elaborate ceremonial event in generations.

Before ascending the throne, expectations hinted at a potential revolutionary change in the monarchy due to his environmental activism. However, Charles has largely mirrored his mother’s approach while incorporating his own style.

Recent polls indicate satisfaction among most Britons with his reign. However, younger generations exhibit less enthusiasm for the royal family overall.

Amidst his health concerns, a prominent issue currently overshadowing the royals is the ongoing feud between his son Harry and the rest of the family. Notably, this includes his elder brother, Prince William.

Ingrid Seward, editor-in-chief of Majesty Magazine, states that Charles, known for working until midnight on his papers, must now slow down due to recent health issues.

“His body will tell him he has to, and Camilla certainly will,” she went on to say. “I think he’s mentally exhausted since the queen’s death. It’s been nonstop for him since then.”

Denmark’s Queen Margrethe II abdicated last month in favor of her son King Frederik X after 52 years on the throne. However, Seward said Charles was unlikely to do the same.

“Absolutely not, 100% no,” she said.
