Kim Jong Un Holds Military Parade to Showcase ‘Mighty’ North Korea and Rising International Status

North Korea appears to have held a military parade in its capital, Pyongyang, to commemorate the anniversary of the ruling Workers’ Party, according to South Korean and Chinese state media. The parade, which was widely anticipated to be staged at night, is a frequent tactic used by the nuclear-armed nation to showcase increasingly advanced military technology, including ballistic missiles.

Global Attention and Geopolitical Signaling

The parade was closely watched by international analysts for the potential unveiling of a new, solid-fuel intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), which could have the range to strike the US mainland. South Korean military sources had previously indicated a parade was likely, citing rehearsal activity involving military equipment and troops.

At a ceremony marking the anniversary, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un declared that the country’s global standing is rapidly rising. Flanked by high-level officials from allied countries, including China and Russia, Kim hailed North Korea as a “faithful member of socialist forces” and a “bulwark for independence” against the West’s global power.

Advancing Diplomacy

The anniversary celebrations underscored North Korea’s efforts to strengthen ties with key partners:

  • China: Visiting Chinese Premier Li Qiang attended the celebrations and held talks with Kim Jong Un, which both sides hailed as marking a “new chapter” in their relationship and included pledges to expand strategic dialogue.

  • Russia: Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev met with Kim and expressed gratitude for North Korea’s support of Russia’s military campaign in Ukraine.

  • Vietnam: Kim also met with Vietnamese Communist Party chief To Lam, where they discussed boosting cooperation. An East Asian politics scholar noted that Vietnam could serve as a valuable economic partner and a crucial channel for communication with the West, especially given Russia’s current isolation.

In a speech, Kim praised the ruling party’s 80-year history for making “not a single mistake or error,” asserting that the country now stands as a “mighty people with no obstacles we cannot overcome.”
