Israeli strikes in Gaza kill 35 Palestinians, reports say

Israeli bombings in various areas of the Gaza Strip resulted in the deaths of at least 35 Palestinians early on Thursday, according to the Palestinian news agency WAFA.

Among the deceased, seven individuals, including children and women, were killed when a residential building on al-Jalaa Street in Gaza City was targeted. Additionally, another 15 people lost their lives when a house, where displaced individuals were taking shelter, was bombed west of the Nuseirat camp in central Gaza.

In the western part of Rafah city, located in the southern Gaza Strip, Israeli airstrikes killed 13 Palestinians and injured others, as reported by WAFA. These casualties occurred while the victims were providing aid.

Earlier, medics stated that at least 30 people were wounded in the Rafah attack, with several in critical condition.

In the nearby city of Khan Younis, a group assigned to secure aid shipments suffered injuries from a separate Israeli airstrike. Medics confirmed that several people were injured in that incident as well.

The Israeli military did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Armed gangs have frequently hijacked aid trucks soon after they enter the enclave. In response, the Islamist group Hamas has formed a task force to confront these gangs. According to sources from Hamas and medics, the forces led by Hamas have killed more than two dozen gang members in recent months.

Hamas reported that Israeli military strikes have resulted in the deaths of at least 700 police officers responsible for securing aid trucks in Gaza since the war began on October 7, 2023.

Efforts for a ceasefire led by Arab mediators, Egypt, and Qatar, with support from the United States, have failed to achieve a deal between the two conflicting sides.

On Wednesday, the United Nations General Assembly voted overwhelmingly in favor of an immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire between Israel and Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip. The assembly also called for the immediate release of all hostages. While General Assembly resolutions do not carry legal weight, they do reflect global opinions about the conflict.

The United States, Israel, and seven other countries opposed the ceasefire resolution, while 13 countries chose to abstain from voting.

The conflict in the Palestinian enclave started when Hamas gunmen attacked Israeli communities in October 2023. They killed approximately 1,200 people and took around 250 hostages back to Gaza, which is governed by Hamas, according to Israeli statistics.

In response, Israel’s military has bombarded large areas of Gaza. This assault has displaced nearly all of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents and has led to severe hunger and disease. Palestinian health authorities report that over 44,800 people have died as a result.
