Grab expands contactless payments with iPhone tap-to-pay launch

Grab has introduced a tap-to-pay function on iPhone that enables merchants to accept in-person contactless payments without the need for additional point-of-sale (POS) hardware, the company said in a statement.

The service supports contactless debit and credit cards, Apple Pay and other digital wallets. Merchants can process payments by holding a card or compatible device close to the iPhone, using the handset’s built-in near-field communication technology.

According to Grab, the feature eliminates the need for dedicated payment terminals, reducing hardware requirements for face-to-face transactions.

Payment data is encrypted and secured through the device’s secure element, the company added.

The feature will be rolled out to merchants in selected Southeast Asian markets, subject to device compatibility and regulatory approvals. Merchants can enable the service via the Grab Merchant App.
