Germany will donate an additional 300 million euros ($326 million) in aid to Syrians. Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock announced this pledge through the United Nations and select organizations on Monday, before the EU-led donor conference in Brussels.

Baerbock stated that more than half of these funds will directly help people in Syria. She clarified that the implementation will occur “without the transitional government in the country.”

The foreign ministry indicated that the funding will supply food, health services, and emergency shelters. It will also provide protective measures for vulnerable populations.

The support will extend to Syrian refugees and host communities in Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq, and Turkey, she added.

Baerbock reiterated, “As Europeans, we stand together for the people of Syria, for a free and peaceful Syria.”

She emphasized the need for an inclusive political process to secure a peaceful future for Syria.

Furthermore, she called on the transitional government to investigate the killing of hundreds of civilians in Alawite villages. She demanded that the government hold those responsible accountable.

She also noted violent clashes that happened in Syria’s coastal region this month, involving loyalists of deposed President Bashar al-Assad and the country’s new Islamist rulers. A war monitoring group reported that those clashes left more than 1,000 dead.
