Democrats Condemn Trump’s Iran Strike Amid Global Calls for De-escalation

President Donald Trump’s decision to strike Iranian nuclear facilities on Saturday night was met with divided reactions in Washington.

Condemnations of the Strike

Several Democratic lawmakers and even some Republicans criticized the military action, primarily citing constitutional concerns regarding the President’s authority to initiate war without congressional approval.

  • Senator Tim Kaine (D-Va.), a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, condemned the strike as “unconstitutional” and highlighted his recent resolution pushing for White House to seek congressional approval for any military action against Iran.
  • House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) argued that the President “failed to deliver” on his promise of Middle East peace and risked “American entanglement in a potentially disastrous war.”
  • Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) demanded “clear answers” from Trump regarding the actions and their implications, emphasizing that “No president should be allowed to unilaterally march this nation into something as consequential as war.” He also called for the immediate enforcement of the War Powers Act.
  • Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) called the strikes a “disastrous decision” and a “grave violation of the Constitution and Congressional War Powers,” even suggesting it was “clearly grounds for impeachment.”
  • Representative Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) echoed the constitutional concerns, tweeting: “This is not Constitutional.”
  • Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) labeled the strikes “alarming” and “grossly unconstitutional” at a rally where the crowd chanted “No more wars.”
  • Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) called Trump “a weak and dangerously reckless president” and claimed intelligence briefings indicated Iran posed “no imminent threat of attack to the United States” and was “not close to building a deliverable nuclear weapon.”
  • Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), a Trump supporter, expressed concern for U.S. troops and Americans in the Middle East and urged prayers against homeland terrorist attacks.

Support for the Strike

Conversely, several prominent Republican hawks and some Democrats praised the action, criticizing Iran.

  • Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) supported the action to “ensure a nuclear weapon remains out of reach for Iran,” expressing solidarity with President Trump and praying for American personnel.
  • Senator Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) simply stated: “This was the right call. The regime deserves it. Well done, President Trump.”
  • Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) commended Trump and the military, asserting that the operation at Fordow significantly hampered Iran’s ability to “rush to build a nuclear arsenal.”
  • Senator John Fetterman (D-Pa.), a vocal supporter of Israel, called the bombing “the correct move,” stating that “Iran is the world’s leading sponsor of terrorism and cannot have nuclear capabilities.”
  • Representative Ritchie Torres (D-N.Y.) also praised the “decisive destruction of the Fordow Fuel Enrichment Plant” as preventing nuclear proliferation in the region.
  • Representative Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) broke with many Democrats to praise the operation as “essential to preventing Iran from developing a nuclear weapon,” though he still criticized the Trump administration for abandoning the 2015 nuclear deal.

Iran’s Reaction

Iran strongly condemned the U.S. strikes.

  • Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that the U.S. had committed a “grave violation of the UN Charter, international law and the NPT,” calling the events “outrageous” with “everlasting consequences.” He asserted Iran’s right to self-defense.
  • The Iranian Foreign Ministry further accused the U.S. of betraying diplomacy by supporting Israel in imposing a “war of aggression on the Iranian nation” and now launching a “dangerous war against the Islamic Republic of Iran.”

The diverse reactions highlight the contentious nature of military intervention and the ongoing debate surrounding presidential war powers in the United States.
