Apple has notified the European Commission that two of its major services, Apple Ads and Apple Maps, meet the user and business activity thresholds established under the Digital Markets Act. This disclosure triggers a formal review that could result in Apple being designated as a gatekeeper for those services.
The Commission now has a period of up to forty five working days to evaluate the information submitted by Apple and determine whether the company should receive gatekeeper status. If the designation is confirmed, Apple will be required to comply with a series of obligations intended to promote fair competition and prevent dominant technology firms from restricting market access.
A gatekeeper designation would place Apple under stricter oversight within the European Union. It would also require changes in how the company manages interoperability, access for business users, and a range of commercial practices linked to its platform. For Apple, this would represent another significant regulatory challenge at a time when technology platforms across the world are facing increasing scrutiny.
The acknowledgment that Apple Ads and Apple Maps satisfy the Digital Markets Act criteria marks an important shift for the company. While Apple remains a major player in the digital ecosystem, it has historically maintained that its services do not dominate markets in the way regulators have suggested. The Commission will now assess whether the evidence presented by Apple supports its position or whether the firm must undergo a formal transition into full Digital Markets Act compliance.
If the European Commission confirms Apple as a gatekeeper, the company will have six months to adopt the required measures. These may involve operational adjustments across its services and potential updates to its relationships with developers and advertisers. Industry analysts note that such a decision would place additional pressure on Apple at a time when regulatory demands continue to expand in both Europe and other major markets.
