A new strategic partnership sees SMBC supporting the TOMODACHI Initiative’s leadership development efforts.

Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC) has joined the TOMODACHI Initiative as a strategic partner. This initiative cultivates future Japanese and American leaders through various educational exchanges and leadership programs for university students. As part of this new partnership, the TOMODACHI SMBC Shaka-kachi Leadership Program will train 20 Japanese university students in “leadership and creation of social value” from October 2025 to March 2026, including a week-long training trip to New York and Washington D.C. The TOMODACHI Initiative itself is a public-private collaboration involving the US-Japan Council, the U.S. Embassy in Japan, and the Japanese government.
